💋 Between the Sheets & the Script: The Real Role of an Intimacy Coordinator (It’s Not What You Think)

If you think intimacy coordination is just choreographing sex scenes and telling people where to put their hands — think again.

We sat down with Rayann Condy, intimacy coordinator and director to get real about what actually happens behind the scenes of those steamy moments on screen. From modesty garments to shutting down scenes, Rayann is making sure everyone keeps their clothes and their dignity intact.

Here’s what really goes down between the sheets — and the script.

🫢 “Wait… so you just direct the sexy stuff, right?”

Rayann hears this a lot — and nope, that’s not the job.

"The wildest misconception?” she grins. “That I’m a sex coach."

"People often think my job is to choreograph sex scenes," Rayann begins. While yes, she helps coordinate intimacy, her actual job is to protect actors’ boundaries and create a safe space where actors can perform intimate scenes without compromising their emotional and physical boundaries. While working hand in hand with directors & producers to ensure smooth sailing on set.

🔥 Keeping It Safe and Steamy

When asked about the spectrum of intimacy in scenes, from the subtlety of Jane Austen to the boldness of Bridgerton, Rayann notes,

"Regardless of the level of explicitness, the approach remains the same: clear communication, consent, and choreography."

She works closely with directors and actors to establish the context of the scene, ensuring that every movement serves the story while respecting the actors' comfort levels. So yes, it might look hot. But behind the scenes? It’s all marks, beats, breath cues, and barrier checks.

🍆 Addressing The Awkward

Physiological responses during intimate scenes are a natural concern. Rayann approaches this with professionalism and empathy. "We have protocols in place," she explains. "From modesty garments to strategic camera angles, we ensure that actors feel secure and respected."

She also highlights the importance of open dialogue, allowing actors to voice concerns without fear of judgment.

🩲 Modesty wear = magic

You know what’s less glamorous than it sounds? Nude scenes. That’s where modesty wear comes in — and no, it’s not just duct tape.

“Think nipple pads, bulge underwear, flesh-toned padding, and so on,” Rayann explains. These garments combined with careful set protocols, help protect everyone’s bits while keeping the illusion alive on screen. "It's all about ensuring that actors can perform confidently without feeling exposed." In other words: safety first, sexy second.

🫶 “But what if someone’s nervous and doesn’t wanna speak up?”

One of the most critical aspects of Rayann's role is advocating for actors who may feel uncomfortable voicing their concerns.

"Not everyone feels empowered to speak up," she acknowledges. "Part of my job is to be that voice, to ensure that their boundaries are respected."

She implements consent check-ins and encourages a culture where actors feel safe to express their boundaries and discomforts.

🎭The Non-Negotiables

Rayann incorporates specific exercises to build trust and comfort among actors. These include 1-on-1 boundary-setting sessions and blocking rehearsals.

"It's about creating a shared language," she explains. "So that when it comes time to film, everyone is on the same page."

It might sound ridiculous, but it helps actors loosen up, build rapport, and create safe chemistry — without the awkward tension.

🚨 When Lines Are Crossed

While rare, there are instances where Rayann has had to step in. "If an actor's boundaries are breached or if the agreed-upon choreography is not followed, it's my responsibility to stop and reassess," she states. "The well-being of the actors always comes first."

🧼 Intimacy is just the beginning

Rayann’s job isn’t only about what happens under the covers.

"Intimacy coordination is really about culture change. It’s about creating a culture of respect, transparency, and real communication across the board."

In a world where vulnerability is often expected but not protected, her work is a reminder: consent isn’t a buzzword — it’s the baseline.
